The Ethiopian Deresa Geleta, who had a personal best of 2:05:51, won the 39th edition of the Zurich Marathon of Seville, also shattering the record of the event and establishing it at 2:03:27 after starring in a beautiful battle with the Frenchman Morhad Amdouni in the last fifteen kilometers of a race to remember. Geleta thus renewed the Seville marathon record, held by Asrar Hiyrden since 2022 (2:04:43).
Along with the Ethiopian and Amdouni (2:03:47), the podium was completed by the Israeli Gashau Ayale, who with his 2:04:53 updated the national record of his country that he himself held and also achieved in Seville. In the women's category, the victory was awarded to the Ethiopian Azmera Gebru (2:22.13), with the Kenyans Josephine Chepkoech (2:22:38) and Magdalyne Masai (2:22:51) in second and third position.
The Zurich Seville Marathon, being 2024 Olympic year, had the Spanish Championship category, which meant that its winners in the men's and women's categories sealed their ticket to Paris. Ibrahim Chakir, eleventh overall and the first Spaniard to reach the finish line of Paseo de las Delicias, achieved it with a time of 2:07:48. In women, Esther Navarrete won (2:24:40), who will also be in the Olympic Games next summer.
With the hares out of circulation around kilometer 25, as ordered to give all possible speed to the race, the Zurich Marathon in Seville has already become a duel between two men: the Ethiopian Deresa Geleta and the Frenchman Morhad Amdouni. Geleta won by abrasion. With a constant rhythm and the same gesture, undaunted, as if the beating of the kilometers traveled had not taken its toll on his body. Long, elegant stride, and look at the horizon. At the exit from Plaza Nueva, with the entire Avenida de la Constitución ahead, there was no longer any possible discussion. When Geleta passed in front of the Cathedral he already knew he was the winner. He floated on his orange sneakers, fighting against a single adversary: the clock. He had the race record within reach and did not fail, stopping the clock at that 2:03:27 with which he inscribed his name in gold letters in the history of the Zurich Marathon of Seville.
El etíope Deresa Geleta, que ostentaba una marca personal de 2:05:51, se impuso en la 39ª edición del Zurich Maratón de Sevilla pulverizando, además, el récord de la prueba y estableciéndolo en 2:03:27 después de protagonizar un bonito pulso con el francés Morhad Amdouni en los últimos quince kilómetros de una carrera para el recuerdo. Geleta renovó de este modo la plusmarca del maratón hispalense, que poseía Asrar Hiyrden desde 2022 (2:04:43).
Junto al etíope y Amdouni (2:03:47), el podio lo completó el israelí Gashau Ayale, que con su 2:04:53 actualizó el récord nacional de su país que ostentaba él mismo y también consiguió en Sevilla. En la categoría femenina, la victoria se la adjudicó la etíope Azmera Gebru (2:22.13), con las kenianas Josephine Chepkoech (2:22:38) y Magdalyne Masai (2:22:51) en segunda y tercera posición.
El Zurich Maratón de Sevilla, al ser 2024 año olímpico, tenía categoría de Campeonato de España, lo que significaba que sus ganadores en categoría masculina y femenina sellaban el billete para París. Lo consiguieron Ibrahim Chakir, undécimo de la general y primer español en la línea de meta del Paseo de las Delicias con un tiempo de 2:07:48. En féminas se impuso Esther Navarrete (2:24:40), que también estará en los Juegos Olímpicos del próximo verano.
Fuera de circulación las liebres en torno al kilómetro 25, como estaba mandado para darle toda la velocidad posible a la prueba, el Zurich Maratón de Sevilla ya se convirtió en un duelo entre dos hombres: el etíope Deresa Geleta y el francés Morhad Amdouni. Geleta ganó por abrasión. Con un ritmo constante y el mismo gesto, impertérrito, como si la paliza de los kilómetros recorridos no hicieran mella en su cuerpo. Zancada larga, elegante, y mirada al horizonte. A la salida de la Plaza Nueva, con toda la Avenida de la Constitución por delante, ya no había discusión posible. Cuando Geleta pasó por delante de la Catedral ya se sabía ganador. Flotaba sobre sus zapatillas naranjas, luchando contra un único adversario: el reloj. Tenía a tiro el récord de la carrera y no falló, parando el crono en ese 2:03:27 con el que inscribe su nombre con letras de oro en la historia del Zurich Maratón de Sevilla.
