MEN: Golden Trail Series – Grand Final: A Second Victory for Elhousine Elazzaoui and a Second Title for Rémi Bonnet.

Madalina Florea (ROM)

WOMEN: Golden Trail Series: Madalina Florea Wins the Grand Final and Sophia Laukli Takes the Title!

Elhousine Elazzaoui wins the Golden Trail Series Grand Final. Rémi Bonnet wins his second title!

Elhousine Elazzaoui demonstrated he was in great shape in the prologue and today he proved he was the out-and-out strongest! Elhousine Elazzaoui (Holyfat, Morocco) has just won the Golden Trail Series Grand Final, the most competitive trail race to date with a 920.6 average ITRA index for the 10 top athletes on the start line. "I’m so happy," he confided at the finish line. "I needed to prove that I could win another race after the Dolomyths. I couldn’t go to the USA because of the visa and so I was eager to prove myself. I was feeling really strong today, but Philemon was incredibly fast. If it had been Rémi, I could’ve tried to attack but it was impossible. I just had to keep in pace with him and wait for the right moment! I’m thrilled with this result and I can’t wait for next year! I’ll say it again: my dream is to win the Golden Trail Series!" Philemon Kiriago (Run2gether, Kenya) led the entire race before succumbing to the Moroccan’s attack just before the final loop. "I can’t be disappointed to be beaten by such an incredible athlete! He was better than me, that’s all! My legs were in great shape today so I could really enjoy it all, the climbs, the flat and the downhill. My aim was to be in the top 5, so I’m immensely satisfied with 2nd place. I can’t wait for next year!" His teammate, Patrick Kipngeno (Run2gether, Kenya) rounds off this Grand Final’s podium. "I had a few issues with my knee before the race, but in the end I felt really good. I was careful in the downhill and pushed hard in the climbs. It was a really tough race but I’m thrilled with this podium spot and I also can’t wait for next year!"

Rémi Bonnet keeps his title!

With a 93-point lead heading into the final, Rémi Bonnet (Salomon/Red Bull, Switzerland) was feeling fairly confident about winning the GTWS 2023 title. However, the Swiss runner had a tricky day. He just managed to hang in there and finished 4th to secure the Golden Trail Series title, his second after last year. "The goal was obviously to win the title and I knew I had enough of a gap, but I also wanted to win the race. It was impossible today; I gave it my all but they were just too strong. I can’t wait for next year, because with these three there’s going to be some incredible battles!" At the end of this exceptionally intense race, Patrick Kipngeno managed to keep hold of his second place overall in front of his teammate Philemon Kiriago.

Miquel Corbera Rubio wins the GTNS Grand Final!

After Eef Van Dongen for the women, it is Miquel Corbera Rubio (Spain, GTNS ESP/POR) who wins the men’s GTNS Grand Final. Overall he finishes in front of Marco Filosi (Italy, GTNS ITALY) and Linus Hultegard (Sweden, GTNS Nordics).

The GTNS NORDICS team takes the crown!

In the GTNS team rankings it is the GTNS NORDICS who triumph after Eef Van Dongen’s victory in the women’s and Linus Hultegard’s third place for the men. Remember, the ranking takes into account each GTNS’ top two men’s and top two women’s times. The GTNS ESP/POR finishes in 2nd place and the GTNS CZE/SVK/POL takes 3rd.

Already at kilometer 5 the first problems came with the hares, which could not maintain Kiptum's cadence. After covering that first set in 14:26, the Kenyan and his compatriot Mateiko were the ones left alone at the head along with one of the hares, Ronald Kirui, who they asked to stand in front to protect them.

The three athletes passed kilometer 10 in 28:42, with a projection a few seconds below Kipchoge's world record (2.01:09). There was still a long way to go, but a historic feat was beginning to take place.

Passing through kilometer 15 lowered expectations by reaching that point below the time of the still record holder. Kiptum and Mateiko were now alone in the lead to pass the half marathon in 1.00:48.

At kilometer 33 Kiptum decided to go for the world record. He left his compatriot behind with a great change of pace and left alone in search of winning the race and making history. As in his second marathon in London, the very young Kenyan athlete improved his pace in the second part of the race and was able to recover the seconds that separated him from breaking Kipchoge's mark.

He passed kilometer 40 with a time of 1.54:23 and wore himself out in the final moments in search of making it more difficult to beat a record that he already had in his hand. He blew two kisses to the public in his last meters, touched his chest and crossed the finish line with open arms ready to embrace his new world record, the best in history.
